Mitolojide Tanrı’nın habercisi olan Merkür’ün asasıdır. ABD ordusu tıp mensuplarının sembolü olup, tıp biliminin sembolü olan Eskülap asaından farklıdır. Merkür asaının çevresinde iki yılan vardır, Eskülap’ta ise, bir yılan bulunur.
